You'll often hear marketers talk in what might seem like code words if you're new to internet marketing. Below are three of the most important terms you'll hear referenced when talking about Google.
SERPs
SERP is an acronym for Search Engine Results Page. You'll hear people say something like "my SERP ranking is falling". The SERP is what's displayed after you type in a query on Google. Their SERP ranking refers to where your web site is listed on the displayed page.
Page Rank
Page Rank is a tool created by Google to help identify the most important pages on the internet. The more important your page is, the higher you'll rank.
Page rank used to be the most important factor when trying to rank high on Googles search results, but there are now over 200 ranking criteria.
Page rank is still important, but it's not given as much weight as five years ago. To find the page rank of your website you can download Google's Toolbar which automatically displays your page rank.
Sandbox
Does it exist? It's a pretty heated debate among webmasters. The sandbox (if it exists) is like Google giving a website a timeout. If a website is misbehaving, using unethical tactics to improve it's ranking, Google will place it in the sandbox to lower it's ranking.
A common scenario is for new websites. Within the first month of launching a new website you'll find your search engine ranking steadily falling until one day you're on page fifteen. That's often refered to as "being sandboxed".
