Search Marketing Basics - Content Network vs Search Network

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) allows you to reach highly targeted customers by using an ad serving platform from a search engine.

You tell the search engine when you want your ads to be displayed and when those criteria are met, your ad is shown to customers.

Not all web pages are equal, however. Where and how your ads are displayed is determined by the network you choose.

Search Network

When you type in a search query at Google a page comes up with nothing but links and text. This is the search network.

Your ads are triggered by the keywords the search user entered. If you have an ad selling iphones, then your ad would only be shown when someone types in a search related to iphones.

Very straight forward. Very targeted. Ads are shown to customers who's query is DIRECTLY related to your ad.

Content Network

The content network is a little different and is an often overlooked gold mine.

When you visit a website (like CNN.com) you see advertisements in certain areas. These ads are triggered by the content on each page.

If you're reading an article about how to lose ten pounds, you'll see several ads that are related to weight loss. It was the content on the page (weight loss) that determined which ads are displayed.

How Are They Different?

The search network is more targeted allowing you to communicate directly with someone looking for your product, but it is also more expensive.

The content network gives you more flexibility allowing you to use text based ads or image ads, but the content network often yields a lower conversion rate.

The strategies to profit from each network are not the same. Strategies that work on the search network won't always work on the content network.
