Important Internet Marketing Terms

Internet marketing has adopted much of its terminology from printed media, making it important to understand the meaning of both references. Below are three important internet marketing terms.

Above The Fold

Internet sales pages have adopted a lot of terminology from traditional printed media, with "above the fold" being a popular term.

Newspapers, for example, have prime real estate for catching a readers attention. When a newspaper is folded in half anything printed "above the fold" is read first and becomes the most important space on the page.

Websites also use the term in reference to scrolling. When you land on a website everything you can see without scrolling is considered above the fold. If you have to scroll down to read something that information is considered below the fold.

You'll often hear internet marketers advise you to put your most important information above the fold because it's the content that is most likely to be read.

Landing Page

If you've been reading about internet marketing you've most likely heard a reference to a "landing page". Put simply, a landing page is the first page a visitor sees when they arrive on your website.

The term doesn't include your entire website, just the first page a visitor "lands" on. If you're using paid advertising the page you link the ad to is your landing page.

When using paid advertising your landing page should be optimized for sales, not casual browsing.

Call To Action

Every landing page has well thought out elements guiding a visitor along the sales path. The final element on a sales page is usually the "call to action".

When you bring a visitor to your website you want them to do something, right? Either you want them to provide their email address so you can contact them later or you want them to buy something.

The call to action tells the customer what you want them to do.

When capturing emails your call to action would be the input form where you ask the visitor to enter their email.
