How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

When first getting started with earning money on the internet it's important to grasp the larger concepts before worrying about the smaller ones. If you can get the big picture all the small steps will make more sense.

So how does affiliate marketing work?

There are three primary players. The affiliate (you), the customer, and the merchant.

Becoming An Affiliate

Becoming an affiliate is incredibly easy. In most cases all you have to do is notify the merchant who owns the product you want to sell. You'll be given a unique ID that you include with every link you create.

When someone clicks on your link, you're given a referral credit. If the referral generates a sale, you'll earn a commission. That's how you get paid.

Attracting Customers

So you've decided to become an affiliate and you know which products you want to sell. Now what, right? The next step is finding qualified customers that would be interested in buying the product you're promoting.

You can use existing forums that are related to the product, create your own blog, post articles, or use paid advertising. You can use any webpage on the internet that allows you to post an affiliate link to the product you're selling.

Getting Commission From Merchants

The merchant tracks all customers that you send. They know how many you send per day, and more importantly they know when you get a sale. If you referred a customer to a website, and that customer makes a purchase you're guaranteed to earn a commission of the sale.

You're essentially forming a partnership with the merchant. You're telling him, "I'll send you customers, if you'll share the sale with me".

That's how affiliate marketing works.
